MTG Drake Haven Alter: Drake Air force
When they wont let you Astral slide in standard This is probably the next best thing so naturally i wanted to have a go at altering it. weirdly the yellows on this one were much easier to match, the pyramids turned out really well. the blue was a little harder but the really difficult part was painting the two new drakes, the one on the left even ended up being turned around as the composition wasnt working. ok now they might fly into each other but it's become one of my favorite alterations. its subtle but at the same time interesting.
And who doesn't want an army of 2/2 Drakes?

MTG Tempt with Discovery Shenron Alter
Something a bit simpler this time around since this is just an art extension. Its worth taking a moment to think about whee we would be standing is this was out view. We would either have to be in a taller tree than the ones in front of us or on the edge of a mountain. Either way that leave the area at the bottom of the image rather dark with just a hint of foliage. It also means we will be looking almost straight on at the clouds and that means we should be able to see the tops of them. I say that but initially I had them extending off the top of the card I knew something was wrong though and luckily realised what it was.
I didn’t want to leave things at that
though. So I summoned a dragon. It could be Shenron, perhaps if
your more MTG inclined it's Jugen or one of the other Kamigawa dragons. whatever the case it was very tiny details.

Daenerys Targaryen and Dragons: Maureen Custom Game of Thrones Playmat Sketch Flowchart
Over on my Facebook page (Here) I recently released an image a day showing the process of coloring my latest mat. So since I've already covered that lets do something a bit different
How about showing how the final sketch came together, using the medium of flow charts and annotations.
Warning it's going to be a big image and you will likly have to zoom in.
There was much use of a lightbox involved in this process. Without it I dont know if i could have added this much detail so its a very useful tool to pick up if you dont have one.One of the modern thin LED ones I mean, the old fashioned ones could be a bit bulky to move.
One of the other neat things to come out of all this is I got a new logo out of it, the wonders of the design process!
That's all for today, see you next time.

Ugin and the Dragonlords Custom Playmat
Welcome back to another episode of attempting to fit large, flying, mythical creatures into a 12 by 24 inch space. Yes today we will be talking dragons (not literally becoming talking dragons – talking about them) as I look at the Ugin and the Dragonlords playmat.
Brief:
Get Ugin and the five Dragons of Tarkir
Dragonlords onto a mat (thats clearly a band name which explains why
the colour scheme ends up very similar to the Blue Eyes Ultimatemat), the planeswalkers Sorin, Elspeth, and Sarkhan should be riding
Ugin.
Initial Thoughts:
Right off the bat there is an issue of
scale. If we make the walkers the central focus then theres not much
room left for the dragons, conversely with the dragons as the focus
the walkers will be end up being quite small. Best to keep this in
mind while working on the sketches.
Secondly if the walkers are riding Ugin
what does that mean? Do we draw him in a typical dragon flight pose
with them on his back? How will that affect his look since he's got
more of a humanoid body layout?
Thirdly how the heck am I going to get
all these wings on here and not end up obscuring more relevant
details?
Sketching:
A great deal of time was spent drawing
thumbnail sketches, trying out various layouts then narrowing down
the list of options. Quite early on I discard the idea of having all
the dragons flying along on some sort of sky background since then
everyone ends up tiny to get everything in. Next out goes the idea if
the walkers on Ugin's back, I don’t like focus and there are some
odd angles. For some reason I get inspiration from those WW2 American
recruitment posters Ugin Needs You! So now the walkers are going to
have to sit on his shoulders. He only has two and we are trying to
avoid the image being too symmetrical so one is slightly further away
from us that doesnt leave much space for three large people. Well
he's got a hand free theres an empty space in the lower right of the
image that could work.
I'm finally getting a better sense of
how I want these dragons personality’s to come across. Red / Black
wants to be zooming along so lets try and get some sense of speed
maybe a swooping motion. We have enough space available to have at
least one pair of wings in full view, what do you mean she has two
pairs?
Theres no way Blue / Black is going to
be exerting much energy if he doesn’t have to, anywhere on the
ground is fine.
They are dragons so there should
probably be some breath attacks somewhere. Red / Green seems the best
choice, fire and all that, also we want bulk and a sense of strength.
Theres a large space in the bottom right free which means...
We need to balance out the image so the
other bulky dragon has to go in the opposite top corner. Have a
breath attack to mirror the other? Perhaps though Red / Blacks wings
fill that role. Going to have to work the White / Green dragons pose
around Ugin's pointing finger though, perhaps landing? Reminder to
look up falconry.
Which leaves Blue / White. Keep it
flowing. Inquisitive, what do Planeswalkers taste like?
Final layout.
I'm going for something slightly
different this time since the wings and breath attack form a useful
box that draws your eye around the image BLACK. I mean there are
still going to be spirals in it, duh, but they aren't whats holding
the layout together the RED lines show a number of them but there are
vortices all over the image.
Ugin needs enough image space to have
room for not only his own great bulk but for walkers to hang on. I
decide to draw him being released from his cocoon since it means I
wont have to draw his legs. One of the weird things about Ugin, and
Bolas is that they have been depicted in art at a variety of scales
from slightly larger than human to towering monstrosities. If I'm
going to fit the Planeswalker's on him then Ugin's going to have to
be closer to the later and if thats the case we can making him look
bigger by placing our viewer lower in the image, as if we are looking
up at him, BLUE. Since Ugin is also the main focus of the image we
are going to have him as central as possible.
Hey look the GREEN lines show us
everyone more or less fits within the rule of thirds its almost like
I planed it that way. We are also trying to keep the dragons away
from the page edges, its not entirely been possible since there are
arms and wings going everywhere but for the most part their bodies
don’t touch the edges.
Walking Through The Air.
I scan the mats into the computer to do
most of these blog posts. As you can imagine an A4 scanner isn’t as
large as a mat so it involves combining six separate scans into a
cohesive whole. It also has the side effect of showing up the mats
underlying fabric structure which while interesting in its own right
does slightly distract from other details. The trade off of course is
that if I just photographed the mats I may not get all the details in
the first place. I think in the end it comes down to what your trying
to show and for me and this post it apparently means beards and fly
away hair.
In the above image we zoom right in to
look at the details on the walkers, keep in mind these are really
tiny details, in the face boxouts we are looking at areas somewhere
in the region of 1cm square so theres not a lot of room. The main
goal then is not to try and add as much detail as possible but to
draw something that implies what you want it to when viewed at from a
more natural distance.
Lets take Sorin's head as an example.
It's a blue square with a dark line that may imply cheekbones, a 'L'
shape that may be where the edge of the nose is, two dark ovals and a
slightly lighter splodge where the eyes are expected, and a thin
line that could be construed as a mouth. Its not really a head its a
series of marks but because of the way our brains lie to us thats
what we interpret it as. As an aside its always amusing to see who
Facebook thinks characters you have drawn are, its sort of nice as an
artist to know a computer at least thinks these marks on the page are
vaguely human shaped.
The box next to that is interesting
also since it shows how the fabric doesn’t always scan the same in
each section. Putting the whole image together tends to be easier if
you scan each section the same way up.
Whilst these areas are very small you
can still use light and dark to try and recreate certain effects. If
we draw little '>''s in a darker colour on Elspeth's armour it
gives the impression of scale mail. On the other hand the little
black bump on the side of Sarkhan's hand is probably just a tiny bit
more detail than we actually need, its meant to be his thumb but we
could probably expressed 'hand'-ness without it. Its all about
striking a balance, make sure to move between working close up and
looking at you image from a distance.
Finally since they are riding a large
once godlike dragon lets mess their hair up a bit to give more of a
sense of movement. Elspeth may or may not also be slightly concerned
about her armour melting. As she should, we are dealing with 'Ugin
and the Dragonlords' they know how to turn it up to 11.
Until next time... I want to make a
rock the dragon pun but the Dragonball mat was a few posts ago.

Blackflame Dragons Custom Playmat

An aside on the nature of mat relocation.
Before that however i must first note that the owner of this mat had it with them at YCS London this past weekend (October 2014) where it was stolen, while there are a number of my mats that I know of that have gone on to explore the world with people other then those who they were originally designed for, in this particular instance its obviously not an ideal situation so if anyone comes across it in their own travels I would be grateful if you let me know, either on FB or the contact form.
Going forward in addition to the logo, date, and unique number on each mat i will most likely be adding this sites web address. As I have mentioned before i cant help thinking that it would be quite nice to have some way to track mats, even if its just a web form that people can fill in, it occurs to me that had I known this when I was working on my final year project at university it would be the sort of thing that would be a relatively easy First, assuming of course you could get enough feedback.
And now back to our regularly scheduled program.
Musings on potential apps aside this mat called for the cramming of as many dragons of both Yugioh and Pokemon verities as possible into the space available, while simultaneously maintaing enough room for a complex background. As discussed last time theres a scale limit to how small you can go doing the Pendulum mat first definitely helped get me in the right frame of mind. Design wise Its relatively straightforward to take a group of characters and squeeze as many as possible into the available space, i have done it before myself with both the Vampire and another mat I don't believe I've talked about yet. It's mostly a process of Tetris-ing everyone until you find poses that look right and fit the correct scale while working within the golden ratio layout for example. On the other hand having to get sixteen characters to fit on a background that the viewer has to be able to parse mentally as an actual object is a tad more difficulty and requires slightly more in the way of design preparation
Your initial sketches are going to have to take into account things like how the creatures wings have a tendency to make them at least twice their body size and can obscure large parts of the background for minimal gain. theres a good reason a number of dragons are placed around the edges of the mat for example.
All the colours of the rainbow, well five anyway, if one of those is dragon.
Thumbnail sketches done the first thing I started on was the background. Strangely it felt a bit like I was working on a cycle of basic land for Magic the Gathering. Admittedly though that may have had something to do with both Yugioh and pokemon also having element systems and the fact that the background needed to feature a mountain with ice fire earth lightning and sky areas.
Even all the way back at the twilight mat you could say I have a particular style when it comes to drawing crumbling rock. The glacier, mountain, and lava areas on the other hand did require me to spend some time looking at actual reference material, the way the trees and grass on the lower slope gradually become more spares as the gradient increases or the way the snow and ice build up at the edges of the glacier are not just things I've made up but are actual physical phenomena that I have noticed looking at the world around me and reference images.
Most of the time when I'm doing mats these days I'll work on the full scale sketch that includes everything in it and go from there. In this instance however I wanted to make sure I had a real place fully designed before I started adding the dragons. Doing it the other way could have meant large blank spaces opening up in the background if i suddenly decided that I didn't like the placement of one thing or another which would have then needed filling back in and thats just more work, also you cant always guarantee you will get the same look.
After the jump we look at turning Pokemon into Yugioh dragons and finish going through the process of describing how I went about making this mat, theres pictures and everything.
What a big nose you have. All the better to impale you with.

If you have wings you will likely have some sort of bizarre protrusions from what on birds would be the wrist joint. It could be anything from spikes to engines and/or assorted gems or other paraphernalia. In addition the chances are quite high that the bones that make up the wings will be highly visible and/or made of metal even if your not a skeleton dragon.
Next up we come to the head area and if your a Yugioh dragon you can look forward to having either some sort of pointy nose protuberance or a large angular chin and/or some sort of spiky looking assemblage of horns or skull extensions. Like the wings chances are you will have at least one gem inset into your head somewhere.
In terms of the body chances are high that no mater if your made of metal, stone or some from of sentient plant you will have an overlapping armoured section somewhere about your person even if its just the tail. Theres also a high chance that this armour will cover your chest and again your likely to be covered in gems, or spikes or some sort of lined area that just so happens to be a complementary colour with the rest of your colour scheme.
Finally if your a fire monster you will either be literally made of fire or your background will make sure that concept is clearly apparent.
Sticking to these principles I worked my way though the Pokemon that would be on the mat. Gradually nudging them more into line with the style we are going for. This Tyranitar for example gets his normally rounded edges made angular with added spikes (1). The various holes in his body get adjusted slightly I wanted those on his legs to be more vent like (2). He already has lines on his chest so we can just extend that element all the way down and along the underside of the tail (3). Obligatory gem in the forehead, the head gets a slight shape change (think Blue Eyes White Dragon) which lets me add the ridges above the eyes (4). Finally we dd a pointy chin and fill the mouth full of needle like teeth (5).
When i was finally done with everyone I had a large pile of sketches that could be scanned in and added to the background design.
Gestalt mode.
The next phase was slightly complicated by, as you may have noted, the fact that the various combatants are mostly fighting within elemental groups, if your aligned with the ice element for example chances are your over in the glacial area mixing it up with other of your kind. It took some time to move things around scale and flip them until i was happy with how everything was looking, just play around in your image editor of choice moving layers about until you get things roughly how you want them. Next up we print the resulting image out and redraw the whole thing in an attempt to make sure the various characters looked as if they were in the space rather than pasted on top. which as it happens is the main downside to this approach.
A few more passes between the computer and physical sketching and finally I had the design laid out on the mat. I could finally start on the colouring.
You've got a point.

The design probably doesn't need trees and houses but they help to tell the eye what the scale is, much like the Pokemon in the background work a bit like scale birds, the artist is trying to show the audience that something is big by showing them something they should know the size of to compare it against. The use of little dots also extends to the reflections in the water and some of the scale textures on the dragons themselves. I'm not sure of the likelihood of doing an entire mat this watt though.
Blue is the new orange.
For once we also have a blue sky, mainly due to the fact orange and green were off the table because of the colours I had already used in the image. The way it lightens towards the center is mainly an attempt to draw peoples attention inwards, while the creatures are roughly placed in a spiral the main layout is just a straight rule of thirds grid.
Once the main colouring is done I work on the spell effects which in this instance is mainly just the ice beam attacks so thats quite straightforward, even if it does seem a bit unfair Trishula gets three beams to everyone else's one. all that done its time to seal it and we are done.
For a few dragons more.
If this mat doesn't turn up i will likely be called on to create a second version which will be interesting since I don't normally do repeats. Luckily I tend to keep all the working files and materials involved in a mats production so I wont have to start over from scratch. It will be interesting to discuss what changes and differences there are between the two images so that will be fun. As to why I call it the Blackflame mat thats mainly due to the fact Horus breathing fire seemed like he was one of the inspirations behind the who project.
Next time either skeletons or more Pokemon. Until then keep your style guides handy.
